An Early Blunderbuss

An Early Steel Barrelled Flintlock Blunderbuss by I. Annely, Early 18th Century. With three-stage barrel flared at the muzzle, octagonal breech becoming polygonal and signed along the top flat, plain tang, border engraved lock decorated with scrolling strawberry foliage, highly figured full-stock, brass mounts comprising scrolling side-plate, engraved brass butt-plate secured by iron tacks, simple brass escutcheon, engraved brass trigger guard with pointed finials, baluster brass ramrod pipes, with wooden ramrod. Thomas Gunmaker, Bristol, 1734-81. His name and mark has been noted on guns with London proof marks and silver marks by Jeconish Ashley. Edward & Joseph Annely, also gunmakers of Bristol, are recorded as early as 1722, but do not appear to have any connection with London although a lock by Joseph is fitted to a gun by Andrew Dolep.
