A Superb Pair of Silver Mounted Flintlock Holster Pistols by Griffin, Hallmarks for 1769-70, Silversmith’s Mark of John King. With slightly swamped brass barrels, each signed within an elongated loop along the breech flats and stamped with London proofs and Barrel smiths mark, border engraved tangs, border engraved locks signed beneath the pans, beautifully figured full stocks, carved with shells behind the tangs, cast and chased mounts comprising foliate side-plates and vacant escutcheons, border engraved spurred pommels each with grotesque mask cap within a border of shells linked by scrollwork, trigger guards each engraved with flower heads on the bows and with scallop shell finials, silver ramrod pipes, with ornamental tipped ramrods. The silver all hallmarked for 1769-70 and with John Kings mark. In fine condition overall.
Notes:
Joseph Griffin was turned over to his father in 1741 and was free of the Gunmakers’ Company in 1750. He was appointed Gentleman Armourer to His Majesty’s Stables-in-Ordinary in 1760 and was elected Master of the Gunmakers’ Company in 1761 and 1763. In partnership with his father until 1770 and with John Tow between 1771 and 1782, he died in 1784.
