A Mortuary Sword, 17th Century
An English ‘Mortuary’ Hilted Backsword, 17th Century. With tapering blade double-edged at the point and cut with a narrow fuller running along the back edge of the blade, on both sides, and stamped with a blade smith mark, a crowned ’S T’, the ‘pattern’ guard chiselled with portrait busts representing Charles I between scrolling foliate borders, the base of the knuckle guard chiselled with a leaf motif, globular pommel with button and chiselled scrolling foliage, twisted wire grip.
