A German Sword-Rapier, Circa 1600. With broad tapering double-edged blade of flattened diamond section cut with three central fullers engraved on ones side, ‘MISINAL XX ESEL NOMBRE X E IESVS XX’ (My sign is the name of Jesus) and, ‘XXX ESPADERO XX EN XX ALMANIA XXXX’ (Swordsmith in Germany) recessed ricasso struck on each face with a bladesmith’s mark with incised line borders, iron hilt comprising asymmetrical guard of flattened bars comprising two other side-rings linked to the knuckle-guard by a curved bar above, inner-guard of three slender bars of rounded section swept-up to join the knuckle-guard, downcurved rear quillon with lobed terminal, flattened barrel-shaped pommel with button finial, and original wooden grip fluted along each side and bound with twisted iron wire (old repair to top of grip).
