A German Sword Rapier, Circa 1600.

With broad sharply tapering double-edged blade of flattened diamond section, recessed ricasso struck on each face with a bladesmith’s mark with incised line borders, iron hilt retaining a large amount of original blueing and comprising asymmetrical guard of flattened bars comprising two other side-rings linked to the knuckle-guard by a curved bar above, inner-guard of three slender bars of rounded section swept-up to join the knuckle-guard, downcurved rear quillon with lobed terminal, flattened barrel-shaped pommel with button finial, and original wooden grip fluted along each side and bound with twisted iron wire

The marks on the ricasso are those of Wolfgang Standtler of Munich. The sword belongs to a group made for a Bavarian corps, probably the Munich town guard. Many examples survive in the Bayerisches Armeemuseum, Ingolstadt
