A Flintlock Officers Pistol by Wogdon. With round tapering barrel, signed ‘LONDON’ within an elongate teardrop, stamped with London proofs and Wogdons own barrel smith mark, border engraved tang and screw, stepped bevelled lock, signed within an oval wreath beneath the pan, full-stocked in walnut with slab-sided grip, brass furniture comprising trigger guard, decorated with a flower head on the bow and pineapple finial, turned brass ramrod pipes and horn tipped ramrod.

Robert Apprentice to Edward Newton, gunmaker, Grantham, Lincs, 1748. Gunmaker at Mr Maw haberdasher, Cockspur Street, Charing Cross, 1764; Haymarket, 1774-1802. With John Barton traded as Wogdon & Barton, from 1795, succeeded by Barton, 1803. Famous for duelling pistols. Poem, Stanzas on Duelling, by an Irish Volunteer, 1783, began, ‘Hail Wogden, Patron of that Leaden death’.
