A Brass-Barrelled Flintlock Blunderbuss by J. Probin of London. With three-stage octagonal to round barrel, belled at the muzzle, stamped at the breech with London proofs, foliate engraved steel tang, stepped, bevelled lock signed ‘J. Probin’ in script, full-stocked in walnut cut with a band of chequering at the wrist, beautifully engraved steel furniture comprising, foliate engraved butt-plate, elaborate pillared trigger guard with pineapple finial, and brass ramrod pipes, horn-tipped ramrod with steel worm.

John Gunmaker, 29 Lisle St., Leicester Square, 1826-41 (age 55, 1841 census). 70 Strand, 1842; 11 Agar St., Strand, 1843-6; 115 St Martin’s Lane, 1847. Another John Probin, Birmingham, c. 1770-1800. Sometimes marked his guns ‘London’.
