A Superb Pair of 18 Bore Flintlock Holster Pistols by D. Newton, circa 1715. With three-stage round barrels slightly swamped towards the muzzle, signed ‘D. NEWTON’ and decorated foliage at the breech, stamped with London proofs, foliate engraved tangs, with facetted ‘Dutch style’ locks, with cocks decorated en-suite and square topped frizens, highly figured walnut stocks with raised mouldings around the barrel tangs, locks and ramrod pipes, fitted with engraved silver mounts comprising long eared butt-caps decorated with foliage and grotesque butt masks, pierced silver side-plates, facetted steel trigger guards with acanthus leaf finials, unusual single baluster pipes for the ramrods.
