A Superb Cased 16 Bore Flintlock Sporting Gun by T. Mortimer. With round sighted tapering barrel, signed ‘LONDON’ in gold gothic script and decorated with a spray of foliage, octagonal breech signed within a gold poincon ’T. MORTIMER LONDON’ and deeply engraved with stands of arms either side, single gold line and platinum breech plug, stepped bevelled lock, border engraved and decorated with sprays of foliage at the tail, cock decorated en suite, rainproof pan and roller, figured half-stock with chequered grip, border engraved iron mounts comprising butt-plate with a shield and foliage, trigger guard decorated with foliage on the bow and pineapple finial, silver fore-end cap, barrel bolt escutcheons and vacant oval escutcheon, original brass tipped ramrod with worm: in its original lined and fitted mahogany case with accessories including powder flask, cleaning rods, leather shot flask and belt, the interior of the lid with the trade label of Thomas Mortimer, Ludgate Hill, the exterior of the lid with circular brass escutcheon, London proof marks.

Contractor to East India Co., 1796-1807. Gunsmith in Ordinary to George III, 1805. In partnership with brother Harvey Walklate as H.W. Mortimer, Son & T. Mortimer, 1800-1807; then as Thomas Mortimer & Son. Elected Assistant, Farriers Co. 1818. Died 1824.
