With sighted barrel rifled with six grooves and retained by spring-held barrel bands, the breech stamped 'M. 1865' behind the calibrated adjustable back sight, characteristic action and back-action lock, stamped 'Spencer Repeating Rifle Co. Boston. Mass. Pat's March 6 1860' on the receiver, figured butt and fore-end, steel mounts comprising trigger-lever and butt-plate, the latter with magazine tube, saddle-bar and ring, and sling loop.
