The Elliot [or Old Model] Navy revolver followed on from the earlier Remington Beals Navy. William H Elliot was granted a patent on 17th December 1861. This patent was in connection with the loading lever and is the patent referred to on the top strap of the barrel. By virtue of an Ordnance Department contract dated 13th June 1862 some 4,500 Elliot Navy revolvers were supplied during a six months period in 1862 for the Union Army during the American Civil War. No further contracts were issued for this model. It is, therefore, one of the rarest of the Remington martial revolvers.
