A Scarce Allen and Wheelock Centre Hammer Army. With round sighted barrel, octagonal breech stamped, ‘ALLEN & WHEELOCK, WORCESTER, MASS. U.S. / ALLEN’S P.T.’s JAN. 13,1857 DEC 15, 1857, SEPT. 7, 1858.’ plain round cylinder, plain frame slab sided grip.

Made circa 1861-62; total quantity usually estimated about 700.
Records show that 536 Allen revolvers were bought by the U.S. government in 1861; they do not however indicate which model was bought. It has generally be assumed that it was the .44 Army type.
