A Flintlock Sporting Gun by John Manton, No. 3882. Reconverted to flintlock. With browned twist octagonal to round sighted barrel, signed in gold along the top flat, ‘MANTON LONDON’ with double gold line inlaid breech block with gold touch-hole, profusely engraved steel tang, border engraved signed lock, decorated with game birds at the tail, with French cock and water-proof pan, half-stocked in walnut, cut with chequering at the wrist, engraved steel mounts comprising border engraved butt plate decorated with game birds on the tang, engraved trigger guard with game on the bow and pineapple finial, original brass tipped ramrod with concealed worm.

MANTON
John, brother of Joseph, born 1752. Apprenticed to John Dixon, gunsmith, St. Martins Leicester, 1766; to William Edson, gunsmith, Grantham, Lincs, 1768. Served as foreman to J. F. Twigg. Gunsmith 6 Dover St., Piccadilly, 1781-1814. Appointed to Gunmaker in Ordinary to George IV, 1831.
