A Flintlock Officers Pistol
A 16 Bore Flintlock Officers Pistol by John Gill, London. With round barrel stamped with London proofs and barrel smiths mark, engraved ‘LONDON’ along the top flat, foliate engraved tang, stepped bevelled lock, signed ‘JOHN GILL’ beneath the pan, cock decorated en suite, full-stocked in walnut decorated with a spray of silver wire behind the tang, simple brass mounts comprising butt cap engraved with a spray of foliage at the tail, trigger guard decorated with a flower head on the bow and acorn finial, plain ramrod pipes, with brass tipped ramrod.
Thomas File and saw maker, Birmingham, from 1744. Made springs for Millers Flying Machine, c.1783. Became contractor to Ordnance for swords, firearms and ironmongery. Addresses in London: 11 Charing Cross, 1783-4. 22 Norfolk St., Strand, 1799-1800. Died 1801.
