A Flintlock Duelling Pistol by Wogdon & Barton. With sighted octagonal barrel, signed Wogdon & Barton London in script along the top-flat, with gold touch-hole, foliate engraved tang also incorporating rear-sight, signed stepped lock, fitted with a sliding safety, full-stocked in walnut (repair to fore-end) cut with chequering at the grip, steel mounts comprising trigger guard with pineapple finial, decorated with a shield surrounded by foliage on the bow and retaining traces of original blue, turned ramrod pipes and original loading rod.

Robert Apprentice to Edward Newton, gunmaker, Grantham, Lincs, 1748. Gunmaker at Mr Maws haberdasher, Cockspur Street, Charing Cross, 1764; Haymarket, 1774-1802. With John Barton traded as Wogdon & Barton, from 1795, succeeded by Barton, 1803. Famous for duelling pistols. Poem, Stanzas on Duelling, by an Irish Volunteer, 1783, began Hail Wogden, Patron of that Leaden death.
