A Flintlock Duelling Pistol by Wogdon of London. Reconverted to flintlock, sighted swamped barrel, signed ‘Wogdon London’ breech block with gold touch-hole, foliate engraved tang fitted with standing rear-sight, stepped bevelled lock, signed in script and fitted with a sliding safety catch, with set-trigger, full-stocked in walnut, cut with chequering at the grip with steel mounts comprising trigger guard with foliage on the bow and acorn finial, turned ramrod pipes and original horn tipped ramrod.

Robert Apprentice to Edward Newton, gunmaker, Grantham, Lincs, 1748. Gunmaker at Mr Maw haberdasher, Cockspur Street, Charing Cross, 1764; Haymarket, 1774-1802. With John Barton traded as Wogdon & Barton, from 1795, succeeded by Barton, 1803. Famous for duelling pistols. Poem, Stanzas on Duelling, by an Irish Volunteer, 1783, began, ‘Hail Wogden, Patron of that Leaden death’.
