With round barrel decorated with a band of scrolling at the muzzle and line engraved at the breech, scrolling border engraved box-lock, fitted with sliding safety catch that also locks the frizen, decorated with stand of arms to the right and engraved ‘LONDON’ within an oval to the right and signed ‘WILKINSON’ within an oval to the left, chequered walnut grip, struck with London proofs to the side of the frame. In superb condition overall, retains traces of original colour throughout, screws appear never to have been turned. 


WILKINSON

James 1 Foreman of Henry Nock, acted as his surety, 1800. Successor and son-in-law to Henry Nock, appointed Gunmaker-in-Ordinary to George III, 1805. Gunmaker, 17 Ludgate Hill, 1806-17. Became James & Son. Contractor to East India Company., 1805-39. At Brompton Square, Kensington. Died 1848 (aged 90). 

James & Son Gunmakers to His Majesty, the Hon East India Company & The King & Prince Royal of Persia, 17 Ludgate Hill, 1819-28; 27 Pall Mall, 1829-52; 4 St. James’s Square., 1839; 18 St. Mary Axe, 1850-2. Became Wilkinson & Son and later Wilkinson Sword.

Notes:

James Wilkinson, who was Henry Nocks foreman and took over the business when Nock died in 1804. The pistol was made between then and 1818, when the name was changed to James Wilkinson & Son.
