A Fine and Rare 20-Bore D.Egg Flintlock Carbine. With round sighted rifled barrel signed along the breech flat D. EGG LONDON and stamped with London proofs, plain tang. Border engraved lock flat military style lock, signed D.EGG. Figured three-quarter stock with hand-rail butt, brass mounts of regulation type comprising butt-plate, trigger guard and ramrod pipes, steel saddle-bar of circular section, sling loop, and stirrup ramrod with spring retainer between the ramrod pipes, London proof marks.
Provenance:
This carbine (of a total of eight similar carbines) formed part of a display of arms and armour in the Armoury Hall at Shirburn Castle, Oxfordshire, the seat of the Earls of Macclesfield since 1716, and were probably supplied by Egg to arm a troop of volunteer horse.
