A Good Pair 28 Bore Percussion Duelling Pistol by Wm & Jn Rigby, No. 8721 & 8722. With etched twist octagonal sighted barrels each with bright bore, signed in gothic script along the top flat, case hardened breeches each with three platinum lines and pierced with platinum plus, foliate engraved case-hardened tangs and border engraved detented back-action locks, each signed in gothic script on a scroll, foliate engraved dolphin-shaped hammers, highly figured half-stock each with rounded butts with flattened ovoid pommels (one of the pistols has been cracked through the grip and repaired), blued steel mounts, comprising spurred trigger guards decorated with scrolling designs on the bow and with pineapple finials, vacant oval escutcheons, barrel not escutcheons, blued fore-end caps with no provision for ramrods, with set triggers.

Cased, to Lord Cassillis in 1841 for twenty five guineas (£26-5-0)

Original purchaser in 1841 of this pair, cased; "Lord Cassillis”. It looks as though it would have been Archibald Kennedy (1816-1870), 2nd Marquess of Alisa and 13th Earl of Cassilis, a Scottish peer. The title Marquess of Ailsa was created in 1831 for the 12th Earl of Cassilis.
