A Cased Pair of Flintlock Duelling Pistols by Wogdon cut for Shoulder Stock. With round sighted barrels, signed Wogdon LONDON along the top-flats, engraved with a characteristic bands at the breeches, foliate engraved tangs fitted with rear sights, stepped bevelled lock, signed in script beneath the pans, fitted with sliding safety catches, with set triggers, full-stocked in walnut with flat sided butts, with hidden attachments for shoulder stock, beneath large silver escutcheons engraved J.L. engraved steel mounts comprising foliate engraved butt-caps, trigger guards engraved with a flower on the bows, with acorn finials, turned ramrod pipes with horn tipped ramrods; in an associated lined pistol box with all accessories including bullet mould, powder flask, cleaning rod etc. A nice set, by a great maker.
WOGDON/WOGDEN
Robert Apprentice to Edward Newton, gunmaker, Grantham, Lincs, 1748. Gunmaker at Mr Maws haberdasher, Cockspur Street, Charing Cross, 1764; Haymarket, 1774-1802. With John Barton traded as Wogdon & Barton, from 1795, succeeded by Barton, 1803. Famous for duelling pistols. Poem, Stanzas on Duelling, by an Irish Volunteer, 1783, began ‘Hail Wogden, Patron of that Leaden death.
