A Cased Pair of 16 Bore Officers Pistols by Hewson. With browned octagonal sighted barrels, engraved ‘HEWSON LONDON’ along the top flats and stamped with London proofs underneath, foliate engraved breech plugs, profusely engraved foliate tangs fitted with standing rear-sights, flat, border engraved lock, decorated with sprays of foliage and fitted with sliding safety catches, full stocked in walnut, with vacant rectangular escutcheons, engraved steel mounts comprising trigger guards decorated on the bows and with pineapple finials and engraved ramrod pipes, fitted with captive ramrods. In an associated period case fitted with bullet mould, powder flask and some cast lead balls.

Thomas Gunmaker, 133 Fetter Lane, 1805-08; 36 Picadilly, 1808-20. Perhaps the Thomas Hewson born 1773, who emigrated to South Africa, c, 1820. Gunsmith, Grahamstown from 1837. Died 1851.
