A 25 Bore Flintlock Holster Pistol of Military Design by Lott. With round barrel, stamped with Thomas Lotts barrel smiths mark and what appears to be an Ordnance mark next to the touch hole, plain tang, stepped, bevelled lock signed ‘LOTT’ full-stocked in walnut with flat sided butt, simple brass mounts comprising side plate, engraved ‘C. ARMS’, plain trigger guard with acorn finial and turned ramrod pipe, with horn tipped ramrod.
Notes:
It has now been established that a previously unlisted Gunmaker Thomas Lott was granted the Freedom of the City of Canterbury in 1763. Given the pistol is clearly of military design there is a strong possibility that ‘C Arms’ stands for Canterbury Arms i.e. those acquired by the City for issue to their local militia unit, namely The East Kent Militia Regiment formed in Canterbury, Kent in 1760 for the defence of east Kent against an invasion from the Continent.
