A Flintlock Blunderbuss

A Flintlock Blunderbuss by Barbar with a personal inscription. With brass three-stage barrel, belled at the muzzle, stamped with London proofs and decorated with a scroll of foliage at the breech, also engraved M M M To T N L with foliate engraved steel tang, signed, border engraved lock, cock decorated en-suite, full-stocked in walnut, cut with a band of chequering at the wrist, border engraved brass furniture, trigger guard decorated with a flower on the bow and acanthus leaf finial. A lovely early blunderbuss.

James 1 Son of Lewis, apprenticed to father, 1714; free of Gunmakers Co. and proof piece passed, 1722. Elected Assistant, 1737; Master, 1742. Appointed Gentleman Armourer to George II, 1741 Furbisher at Hampton Court, resigned, 1767. Gunmaker, Portugal Street, 1725-678; Dover St., 1739-67. Died 1773.
